Did you know that your ceiling fan can play an important role in saving you money during the summer and winter months? While the use of a ceiling fan in winter might seem a bit strange, it too can actually save you money on your heating bills. Heat rises, therefore a large amount of heated air can collect in a large room with high ceilings.  In a room with 16′ cathedral ceilings and the thermostat set at 68 degrees F – the uppermost 3 feet can be 90 degrees or warmer before the heater shuts off. This is an incredible waste of energy.

Reverse Your Ceiling Fan and Save!

A great way of getting a more evenly heated room is to run your fan in reverse at a low speed.  This will force the heat that has accumulated at the ceiling to travel down along the walls at which point it has no other choice but to rise again.  This will give your room a more evenly heated feel, and will shorten the time it takes the heater to reach its set temperature. All of this adds up to increased comfort and decreased energy waste within the home.

Get Creative with Your Home Heating

We all must be innovative and creative if we are going to keep our families comfortable this winter without breaking the bank. The cost of energy is always increasing, and this winter is sure to be no different than the last. Reversing your fan is just one step towards decreasing the cost of energy for your home, but much more can be done to save some money this winter. The ball is now in your court to make some much needed changes, and just like this tip, many improvements that you can make don’t have to cost you a penny extra. Start saving and stay comfortable.
